You don't write a novel out of sheer pity any more than you blow a safe out of a vague longing to be rich. A certain ruthlessness and a sense of alienation from society is as essential to creative writing as it is to armed robbery.

It is a good move on their part. Often great movies are not shown or overshadow by mainstream(that what it sells after all) and in the process good movies with a great plot are often not know except in their countries of origin.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is a great example of no mainstream movie that received great success amongst the audience.
