Absorbing article! I guess we cannot imagine what it means to be in Auschwitz or Buchenwald - daily hunger and not to know if this is your last day. Man can be so cruel!!!

It was Levi's gift to be able to bring to life subjects that many would turn away from - whether they be the horrors of the holocaust, or the dry matters of science, he brought his unique and lyrical humanity to everything he wrote.

It was indeed a gift - but a terribly painful one for him to live with.

jb says: Hi Debi. Even more valuable, then, I think, for us. To be the recipients of a pain transmuted into a life-affirming text.

As a fellow Chemist, I have been moved by the writings of Primo Levi - and wrote about him recently as Penguin issued a collection of his short stories :-

You post makes me want to dust off my copy of his Periodic Table -

Sometimes even the most hellish of places, the human spirit prevails

jb says: Hi Ali. Thanks for the link. But you don't give us the title of the Penguin collection of short stories. That would be useful . . . please.
