- “It’s so nice to see you.”
- “Glad you called.”
- “I’d love to chat but I’m late for a meeting.”
- “My cell phone battery was down.”
- “I’ve been so busy this week… we’re really slammed at work.”
- “I’m working on it as we speak.”
- “Jeez… I’d love to but I already have a previous commitment that day.”
- “I’m really looking forward to seeing you.”
- “Oh this is delicious.”
- “You know I’m always honest with you.”

I was on the train last night and a (very irritating) woman on the seat opposite spent the journey texting and loudly yakking to people on her phone. She was about 10 minutes into a shrieking and inane conversation - making it impossible to read my book– when she said “Oh, next stop is mine, have to go now”. Inward sigh of relief from me — but the next stop wasn’t hers! She stayed on the train. I gave her a look but I don’t think it registered.

A couple of days ago I wrote this:
“My most frequent lie has been in answer to the question “Did I wake you?” I can count on one hand the times I’ve answered ‘yes’ to that question. I used to think that this was a polite lie, told to reassure the caller that he or she hasn’t imposed on me. But there is also an undercurrent of shame, or at least embarrassment, which pushes the lie. I should be up and at ‘em, not lying about wallowing in dreamtime. Lately, insomnia and disinterest in maintaining the lie of the Protestant Work Ethic have made me much more truthful.”
I am a first time visitor, but have enjoyed what I’ve read and will return for a longer, deeper visit.
