Stunning novel, had me totally enthralled with his rich pacey writing, his characters, his wit (particularly in the Ruling Class vignette), the art, the architecture, the glory that is Italy etc. Then his plot lost the plot - was Daniel not aware of the danger he put his muse in when he involved her in the recovery of the stolen Caravaggio? And of how entirely flakey his whole plan was? Is that why the end was so sticky? Or will there be a sequal where he wakes up in hospital ready for more? I'll look out for any other, any road up.

A good taster for a great book. I picked it up from my local library because I liked the title, and found I couldn't put it down. As soon as I'd finished it, I ordered 'Betrayal in Naples', which is also terrific. You're right, his writing deserves a readership not confined by the genre.

jb says: Good to see you here, Martin. And thanks for telling us about another book.

This book has been sitting there, awaiting a slump in activity that lets it get read. I guess I should stop waiting.
