Presque vu XXXXVIII

According to This Is London:

Under anti-terrorism measures due to come into force within two years, the US authorities insist they need to do background checks on all UK air passengers travelling to Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico and South America.

Direct flights to popular holiday destinations such as the Bahamas, Barbados, Toronto and Mexico City would all be covered by stringent US security checks examining people’s passport details, travel plans and even how they paid for their ticket.

Redacted. Films about the war.

“This guy should be held accountable for each American death after the release of this filth. He is a treasonist, and should be stripped of his citizenship, and expelled from this country as penniless as he came into it in birth.”

The Numbers Game:
This quote is from Harvard Business School professor John Deighton after witnessing a lecture by James Patterson:

“I’d never actually heard a product speak. It was like listening to a can of Coca-Cola describe how it would like to be marketed.”

George Bush listened to U.S. military and civilian personnel about the challenges in Afghanistan, fighting local government and police corruption, persuading farmers to abandon a lucrative poppy trade for other crops.
He listened to tales of all-night tea drinking sessions to coax local residents into cooperating, and of tribesmen crossing mountains to attend government meetings.

“I must say, I’m a little envious,” Bush said. “If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed.”

“It must be exciting for you … in some ways romantic, in some ways, you know, confronting danger. You’re really making history, and thanks,” Bush said.

Brian DePalma has throughout his career faced brick-bats and insults, but has always challenged our view of media manipulation - Redacted does just that, as well as Nick Broomfield’s film later this week.

Look at how DePalma released CASUALTIES OF WAR and again faced such huge negative critical response. I think the response from the Right in the USA over REDACTED proves just how he touched a nerve.

The truth hurts - and to quote Tony Montana to the brickbats hurled at this fearless auteur ‘F++k ‘em all’

The world we live in is not the same as the one seen through the sanitised reflections in our cathode ray tubes and plasma screens.

About Writing:

Creole began to tell us what the blues were all about. They were not about anything very new. He and his boys up there were keeping it new, at the risk of ruin, destruction, madness, and death, in order to find news ways to make us listen. For, while the tale of how we suffer, and how we are delighted, and how we may triumph is never new, it always must be heard. There isn't any other tale to tell, it's the only light we've got in all this darkness. James Baldwin
