1. Why do you blog?
That’s a good question. I started blogging on a whim during a night of boredom but now it has become a big part of my life. The best thing about blogging for me, is that I have got to meet a lot of other fiction writers. I rarely have the chance to discuss writing in my day to day life, since I do not know many writers. With blogging, I have met writers from every genre imaginable and have learned a lot along the way. I have also found that blogging is a great outlet for Flash Fiction.

2. Which author and/or book has most influenced you?
George R. R. Martin. His style of dark fantasy and his ability to humanize the “bad guys” in his novels has made me view fantasy in a whole new way. He taught me that everything does not have to be black and white and that sometimes the good guys do not win.
Tolkien is also a huge influence. Any fantasy writer who tells you different is lying. I try to honor his memory by not copying him.

3. Which three blogs do you most visit?
Heavy Metal Time Machine because we both have similar tastes in music.
All Kinds of Writing Melly’s site is what a writing site should be. I only wish my site were as informative.
Lingo Slinger Whenever I need a laugh or want to read some quirky flash stories, I check out Lingo.

4. Why do you read fiction?
I tend to read mostly Fantasy and Science Fiction but I have become bored with both genres since most of the stuff out there is run of the mill. I love to read things that are original. After you’ve read the 1000th Lord of the Rings knock off, you start to get bored. Lately, I’ve been reading a lot more non-fiction.

5. What makes you laugh?
I have an undying taste for “potty” humor which is why I still love to listen to the Howard Stern show and South Park. I have also been known to double over in laughter while viewing the movie Clerks.

    Humbled, thanks Fred :)

I agree with you 100% on Tolkien. He’s had too much undeserved bashing lately.

  2. Maxine

This sounds like my sort of blog. And I have no idea why as the subject matter doesn’t overlap with my interests much, but there is something about his writing style and attitude that I really like. Instinct, instinct — hard for me to accept, being such a darn over-analyser.

Melly, your site is awesome…just admit it.

Maxine: Thanks. It’s always nice to hear positive feedback.

    John: Thanks for posting this.

  4. Benjamin Solah

Fred’s a great blogger with some awesome flash fiction. I look forward to his debut novel.

Heavy Metal Fred on a Fiction Blog. Wow.

If you enjoy potty humour, you really should discover the entirety of ‘Family Guy’ and ‘American Dad’ if you haven’t already. Two outrageously funny cartoon series in which no subject is ever off-limits. Stewie, the psychopathic baby, is a personal favourite. And the German goldfish. x

About Writing:

I turn sentences around. That's my life. I write a sentence and then I turn it around. Then I look at it and I turn it around again. Then I have lunch. Then I come back in and write another sentence. Then I have tea and turn the new sentence around. Then I read the two sentences over and turn them both around. Then I lie down on my sofa and think. Then I get up and throw them out and start from the beginning. Philip Roth
